As we look around the many faces at Lakewood, Paul and Mary Ellen Q. are ones that shine with the love of Jesus. Their faith and example has been a great encouragement to many. When Mary Ellen is asked for her favorite Bible Verse she shares John 3:16 at the top of her list. This couple has been a part of Life at Lakewood since 1974 when they were invited by a co-worker to visit here. After that they say "the rest is history." Both Paul and Mary Ellen have been very involved in every area of the church and have been willing workers for the Lord. They are both retired since 2001 after 30 years in the education field. Mary Ellen taught 3rd and 5th grades and Paul taught High School. Paul also served for about 29 years in the Army Reserves. They have two daughters and three grandchildren. Paul and Mary Ellen love to travel (so we don't see their faces all the time!) and have many other interests. Mary Ellen likes to garden, read and do crossword puzzles. Paul also gardens, collects stamps and coins and has an interest in trains. They are both active and on the move and we praise God for the blessing they are to so many. May God bless them as they continue to spread the love of Jesus in all they do!

"Hey, we get recess at King's Club!" That was what some of the kids were excited about this week at King's Club....the weather was beautiful and it gave us a chance to go outside and play. There were even some who were bare foot!! Spring is just around the corner and the children are anxious for its arrival. It has been a great year at King's Club and hard to believe that the year is almost over....God has been so good!

The Respite Program took a field trip last week and ended up in Charlotte. It was a fun day with a visit to the Goodwill Store and then to KFC!! We think that they had to cook more chicken for this group!!! What a blessing to be able to share the love of Jesus through this special program. God has done great things with this group and we praise Him for His faithfulness.

The youth had an awesome time at Camp Barakel and Jake shares a few pictures of this great time. Jake reports that there was tons of fun and some great chapel times too. Two of our youth gave their hearts to the Lord and several made recomittments. What a great opportunity for the youth to grow in their faith....keep praying for God's leading in their lives.

The pile of treasures is growing as March 24 comes closer! The Living Stones Rummage Sale will be that day from 9-2 and promises to be a big one! If you have never been to this sale it is worth your time just to see it. It is a busy day and one of the main fund raisers for the Stones. Donations are still being accepted so clean our your basement and closets!

This picture includes two faces that are sometimes hard to tell apart! This is Grace B. and her twin sons Matthew and Anthony (Anthony has the hat on). This is just part of Grace's family as her husband B. J. and sons Ryan and Jeremiah were not present for the photo. Grace and her family have been involved at Lakewood for a little more than four years and have become active in many areas. Grace volunteers on several committees and is a worker at King's Club. The family had "church shopped" for a long time but Grace says that when she came to Lakewood it felt like home. She was attracted by the programs for the kids and has found a place to bring them up in the ways of the Lord. Grace works at Pennock Hospital and her husband, B. J., drives truck for M & M Restaurant Supply (the big McDonald's trucks). When asked about her hobbies, Grace laughed and said "with four kids who has time for hobbies?!!" Then she quickly added that her "guilty pleasure" is reading which she takes advantage of when there is a spare moment. Grace shares that her favorite scripture is Proverbs 31 about the Virtuous Woman. What a great family and we are blessed to have them a part of our life at Lakewood. May God bless them this week (especially since they were all sick last week)!!!

FUN AT CAMP BARAKEL

The youth had a great week-end at Camp Barakel and Emily P. is the first to share her experience. Emily was very excited as she shared and says that her favorite part of the camp was the tubing. Emily said that; "we went down really fast but going up the tow rope was so slow!" Other things that Emily told about included the "really" good food. She said that the chicken popcorn was great! The speaker for week-end was named Landon and he spoke about "Sowing Your Seed." He shared about sin and how to resist it. Emily said that he was good and she enjoyed him. There wasn't much time for sleep and Emily said that the ride home was really slow and long. Even Jake was tired after so much fun, she said! The thing that Emily will remember most about Camp Barakel was "hanging out with friends." May God bless each one that was a part of this time and continue to strengthen our youth in His love.

This week our "Faces At Lakewood" features our new custodian-Frank C. Frank has been on the staff here at Lakewood for several weeks and already fits right in. Frank grew up in the Lakewood area and graduated from here in 1968. In fact, as a young boy, he attended this church back in the old Woodland EUB church. Frank remembers going to Sunday School in the basement and many other events. He has been married for 44 years and has two daughters and three grandchildren. Frank worked for Fisher Body for 33 years and then 9 1/2 years for the Lakewood School system as a janitor. His hobbies include fishing, hunting and sports. Welcome on board Frank....may God bless you as you work with us here at Lakewood!

GREEN ACRES WORSHIP

The Living Stones shared this past Sunday for the Worship Time at Green Acres in Ionia. What a wonderful time it was as the group shared with puppets, music and dance. Several new residents of Green Acres attended with a really good group for the day. Emily T., Tiffany B., and Bret D., shared in testimony of their faith in Christ. The youth will be attending a Winter Retreat at Camp Barakel this coming week-end. Pray for them as they travel, have fun and experience God's love. It was a great night and a great turn out for the Benefit Dinner for Manna's Market last Friday. Baked potatoes, salad, rolls and dessert were on the menu and it was all good! Approximately $2,500.00 was raised to help those in need. Thank you to all who worked and made this possible and all who so generously gave. Praise the Lord!

Joe was proud of his shirt as his picture was being taken for this week's "Faces At Lakewood" series. Becky just smiled! Joe and Becky A. are regular faces here at Lakewood and have been attending for over 26 years. They were invited to come here to church by friends and have been actively involved ever since. Both Joe and Becky have served on many different committees and positions. Their faithful and dedicated service to God is a reflection of their faith and love for Jesus. When they came to Lakewood they found friends and a family and they are an important part of that equation now. Joe and Becky have two daughters and one son-in-law and they couldn't forget their 3 "grand-dogs!" Becky works for Pennock Hospital and enjoys quilting in her spare time. Joe works for Bradford-White and is often found driving bus and helping area farmers in the fields. It is people like Joe and Becky that make the world a happy place and they certainly share that love at Lakewood. May God bless them this week in a special way!

The church was rocking with great music and the pre-game on the big screen. Jake gave a "super" message on winning for Jesus---but he didn't have the inflatable football on his head then. A group from the Living Stones traveled to Lansing this week to begin filiming for a new video. It was a beautiful Saturday morning and the purple shirts invaded the city! The Living Stones will be filming at different locations during the next month in preparation for their spring and summer performances. The next performance for this group will be Sunday, February 19, at Green Acres in Ionia.

Our families at Lakewood are a wonderful gift from God. Tammy, Scott and Logan P. are one of the families that are part of our church. Missing from the picture are Emily and David. This family has been a part of Lakewood for over 17 years. After the birth of their first son, David, Tammy and Scott wanted to be part of a local church. Seeking a United Methodist church they found Lakewood and have been an important part ever since. Tammy and Scott have been married for a little over 20 years and have raised their children at Lakewood. Scott drives truck for 4 Reasons Transport and his hobbies include trucking and fishing. Tammy is a stay at home mom and loves to scrap book and is involved in Zumba. David is away at school and Emily and Logan are involved in the youth and children's programs of the church. They have all been involved in many areas of the church and are willing and dedicated workers. Praise the Lord for all our families and a special blessing on each one.

The kitchen was bustling as 80 apple dumplings were assembled as a "gift of love" for special friends in our church and community. The Youth did a great job with the Spaghetti Supper this past week! The food was great and everything seemed to run smoothly. It was a good crowd and over $1300.00 was raised toward the Winter Retreat. The Youth will be participating in this retreat at Camp Barakel in Northern Michigan. Pray for our Youth as they grow in the Lord and may this retreat bring many closer to Him!

A new session of Centershot Ministry has started at Lakewood! This class is aimed at 6-8 graders and is a smaller group. All the class is not pictured here but those that are have some pretty big smiles. It is a great experience to witness each one improve their archery skills and learn God's Word together. Everyone was greeted by this cheery couple as we entered the church this week. Wes and Connie M. were the morning greeters and are involved in many areas here at Lakewood. Both are willing and energetic as they share their faith through mission, service and outreach. Wes and Connie first came to Lakewood a little over twelve years ago. They were attracted by the opportunities Lakewood offered for their children as they sought to raise them in God's love. They have been married for 16 years and they clarify that by saying 16 "wonderful years." They have three children and one grandaughter. Connie works for Amway and enjoys photography in her leisure. Wes is employed at Hastings Mutual and finds relaxation in gardening. May God bless Wes and Connie and their family as they continue to be a blessing to others here at Lakewood.

Gail and Clay caught our attention Sunday morning as they came forward armed with a hoe! Representing the Mission Committee they shared the need for a tractor for the Southern Sudan Healthcare Organization. An offering will be taken next Sunday to help this cause and help the people of Sudan farm more land and raise more food for themselves. Amongst the many faces at Lakewood you will find Allen and Joyce W. This couple many times are found in the "behind the scenes" activity but are greatly involved in ministry at Lakewood. Allen and Joyce first came to Lakewood in 2003 as a result of being invited by a neighbor. It was close to their home and as they visited they felt welcomed and included. Joyce is originally from the Muir area and Allen grew up in Woodbury (not many people can say that!). Their strong and committed faith to Christ is shown in both Allen and Joyce's attitude and daily lives. Their love for others is shown as they serve through missions and outreach programs of our church. They can always be found making soap, cooking and delivering meals and sharing God's love in many ways. Joyce enjoys cooking, biking and flea markets. Allen also enjoys Joyce's cooking and has a passion for trains. What a blessing this couple is to so many here at Lakewood...may God bless them too in a very special way!

There is so much going on at Lakewood it is hard to keep up with it all! That is a great thing! Did you know that once a month there is a Blood Pressure Screening? It is a great service and available to anyone. Elaine B. volunteers each month and provides this needed service. Isn't this a great picture?!!! The children were at Bible Blast and were told to close their eyes as part of the lesson....no peeking!! Josiah covers his eyes with his hands, Charlie never does close his eyes, Justin leads the group with eyes shut and intent on the lesson and Jessica is counting her money (at least it looks like it!). This week Jake brought forth the story of the beheading of John the Baptist and that is pretty shocking! Peer pressure was the real message and a super group of youth were on hand to share in it. There is something new and different each week as Jake and a great group of adult volunteers work to reach out to our youth!

It was a BUSY place at Lakewood this past week-end.......a great goup of girls gathered here for a Chrysalis Flight. This 3 day retreat focuses on a concentrated time of spiritual growth and provides an atmosphere for many life changing experiences. Several from Lakewood worked during this Flight and participated in many ways. Shown above are workers preparing for a meeting and those gathered for the special Candlelight Service on Sunday evening. Pray for the girls that felt the transforming work of Jesus in their lives and that each one will continue to grow in His love.

The children's sermon this week shared the thought that God can see our hearts. This picture shows the smiles of the children, it shows what they are wearing and where they are but it can't show what is in their hearts. But, God knows! He desires to fill our hearts with His love, peace and salvation. Pray that our children (and all of us) continue to hear, learn and accept the gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ. (Aren't their smiles awesome!!!)

It was a great start with a good group of youth this past Sunday night. Jake continued his focus on SCANDALOUS STORIES FROM THE BIBLE and got things started for the New Year. There is always something new happening in the youth room and in each of their lives. Pray for the youth as they discover God's path for their lives. What a great Sunday night as 38 children gathered for our first meeting of King's Club for 2012. There was lots of excitement as we got reorganized and looked forward to all that will be happening each week. The Engineer is off on an adventure and has instructed us to pick an Engineer for the Day every week. Carson R. was this week's engineer! We continue to study God's Word each week and focus on learning the Books of the Bible....at least that's our goal!!

These are familiar faces at Lakewood and ones that show the love of Jesus in all they do. Ron and Norine E. have been a part of Life at Lakewood for most of their lives. Ron has been attending Lakewood almost his entire life and Norine has since their marriage almost 52 years ago. Both Ron and Norine have served in many areas of the church and beyond reaching out to others in mission and love. Their faith is a great example to all. When asked what they appreciate most about Lakewood, Norine responds "It's home!" Ron agrees and states that he likes the "connections with the people." They raised their family here at Lakewood which includes three children, nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Ron worked most of his career for E. W. Bliss (39 years) and then at the Co-Op and the Middle School. Norine worked for the telephone company and then was secretary at the Middle School for 18 years. Recently, Ron and Norine were able to enjoy a cruise with several others in their family. They enjoyed the relaxation and worry free time away plus the music, shows and other cruise activities were a highlight. What a blessing Ron and Norine are to many here at Lakewood...may God bless them as they bless others!

The Centershot Ministry ended its fall/winter session last week with a super group. It was a busy night with lots of shooting and practicing the skills each one had learned. The study time was also great with questions and many comments concerning all that had been discussed. The highlight came as we prayed together and one of the students asked Christ to be their Savior and several rededicated their hearts to the Lord. God is so good and we praise Him as He used this ministry to reach the hearts of these children. A special recognition will be held on Sunday, January 8, for those that have participated in the Centershot program.

It is always wonderful to see a family worship together at Lakewood. Kurt and Beth J., and their four children, have been part of Life at Lakewood for over a year and a half. They were invited to come and visit by their neighbors and found a place to call their church home here. Kurt is originally from Lansing but has lived most of his life in the Lakewood area. Beth is a native Sunfield resident. Kurt works at GM and has recently become an adjunct professor for Spring Arbor University teaching Organizational Health and Environments. Beth works at River Inn in Sunfield. The four children.....Doug, Abby, Leah and Kara, range in elementary age to the oldest a senior at Lakewood High School. Thank you to this family for their involvement and leadership at Lakewood. This past Sunday they lit the Advent Candles and are involved in many areas of the church. May God bless them this week and surround them with His peace and love.

IT'S A CHRISTMAS PARTY!

The Keenagers and Respite programs met together last week for a time of celebration. A Christmas program was shared first. Marilyn N. and Beckie F. teamed up on the organ and piano and led us in several Christmas Carols. They also played a special which set the tone for the rest of the morning. Jake D. sang two songs; Good Christan Men Rejoice and O Holy Night accompanied by his guitar. Pastor Dave gave a Christmas Devotional focused on Hark the Herald Angels Sing. Following the program a potluck lunch was shared with lots of sweet treats to follow. A surprise included a Christmas stocking for everyone prepared by Marilyn. It was a wonderful time of being with Christian friends.....can it get any better?

If you have ever turned around during worship and looked back at the sound board you are sure to see this face. Gordon W. is a familiar face at Lakewood as he takes care of many aspects of the sound system each week. Gordie has been attending at Lakewood a little over five years and got involved after visiting and discovering the need for assistance with the sound system. He is a native of Ionia and has two boys and one grandchild. Gordon has worked for Amway for 23 years and is looking forward to retirement in 2012. He hopes to be able to volunteer more in the church and in other areas of interest. The hobbies that most interest Gordie include working with the sound for Christian Bands including J-3 and Crosswise. He also has a passion for antique cars and owns a 1969 Charger. Gordon's willingness to help wherever he can and his contagious smile speak of his faith in Christ. He is a special part of life at Lakewood and may God's blessing be with him this week in a special way.

THE CHRISTMAS BUNNY??

Did you know there was a Christmas Bunny? Apparently he made a visit to Children's Church this week. He normally makes his home with Claire and Ellie B. and this week's lesson was on the animals in the stable when Jesus was born....so they brought him along to help tell the story. The bunny's name is Hunter and is a well loved pet. What a surprise to discover a bunny to help tell the Christmas story......and what fun too!

It has been just a little over a year since Rich T. has been attending here at Lakewood. Last month Rich officially joined the church as a member and has been a blessing to all of us. Rich has been a long time resident of this community and has been married for 56 years. He has five children, 13 grandchildren and (by March of 2012) will have 10 great grandchildren. Rich's faith has been an important part of his life and he claimes John 3:16 as his favorite verse. When asked "what brought you to Lakewood?" Rich quickly answers with "friendliness." He was looking for a change of pace and something different than his previous church offered. He knew a lot of people here and decided to give it a try. Lakewood is now his church home and Rich feels a part of the life here. His hobbies include the Lakewood Choral Society of which he has been a member since 1986. He has also collected miniature cars for many years and has amassed quite a collection. Many of these he has given away but still has some special ones. We pray for Rich and his family this week and may God bless them in a special way!

The Living Stones performance of "Never Gonna Be The Same" was a great success this past week-end! What an awesome group of teens that love the Lord and worked together to share the message. It is always encouraging when you see Sandy J.'s great smile. Sandy is a regular at Lakewood and has been an active part for over 34 years. She has been a great blessing to many as she shares gives of herself in many ways. Sandy loves the fellowship with other people and says that what she loves best about Lakewood is that people "know you and still love you!" Currently, Sandy is serving as the Respite Coordinator and leads this group most every week. Her gentle spirit touches each one as she provides love and care. Sandy has three children and three grandchildren who inspire her life every day. She is retired now and enjoys light sewing and quilting......well.....she started two baby quilts 27 years ago and one is completed!!! She also makes baskets, embroiders and volunteers wherever she is able. Sandy's fondest Christmas memory is when she received a Bride Doll as a gift. She had this for many years and proudly displayed it until it was stolen. Thank you Sandy for all you do at Lakewood! May God bless you and all your family!

There was LOTS of activity at Lakewood last week as preparations were underway for the Thanksgiving Dinner. Volunteers baked pies, popped corn, cooked food, set up tables and were ready for the big day! A great turn out and many deliveries to others provided a good meal and good fellowship. Thank you to all who were a part of this awesome project. We have so much to be thankful for!

These two faces have been a part of Life at Lakewood for many years and have been involved in several areas of service to the Lord. Tom and Marilyn N. have both been here for the better part of their lives. Tom estimates that he has been in the church "60 some years" and Marilyn for at least 45. They have been married for 12 years and between their two families have seven children and fourteen grandchildren. Tom enjoys all kinds of sports and Marilyn's loves are music and baking. Marilyn has played the organ and piano at Lakewood for many years and is more than willing to share her gift at any time. Together Marilyn and Tom carry on the mission project started by Marilyn's mother of making cross bookmarks. These bookmarks are reminders of Christ's gift of life to the world. The bookmarks are given out to many and have traveled around the world proclaiming the message of salvation. Thank you Tom and Marilyn for all you do in the name of Jesus. Pray for this family this week as we continue to encourage each other as the Family of God.

This year's Annual Ron Wierenga Cookie Walk was a great success.....praise the Lord! Over $1700.00 was raised toward the Mission Fund and it was good too! There were cookies of every kind and it was hard to choose your favorite! Thank you to all involved in making this a wonderful project to support many various missions.

What are these two up to?? Franky and Owen play the mischievous characters of Mike and Ike in this year's Living Stones presentation of "NEVER GONNA BE THE SAME." Kara portrays Liz in the play and seems to have a difficult time dealing with these two. Things are beginning to look a LOT like Christmas around Lakewood! Last Tuesday Beckie F. loaded up the van with 87 filled shoeboxes for Operation Shoebox. These will be delivered around the world and our prayers go with them. May the Good News of Jesus Christ be shared! The Christmas Tree is filling up in the Gathering Room too! It is draped with mittens, scarves, gloves and hats all destined for the Lakewood Community Christmas Basket project. What a blessing to be able to share in this way in our own community. Thank you and praise the Lord!

It is a wonderful blessing to walk into Lakewood and see so many new faces. Among those faces are Jon and Kristen H. Jon and Kristen have worshipped at Lakewood since moving to this area over a year ago. Jon's family were formerly members here and have returned after many years in the Grand Rapids area. Kristen is originally from San Francisco, California, but now claims Michigan as home. They have been married for 11 years and both enjoy music greatly. Kristen loves to cook and is currently a stay at home housewife. Jon works for Xtend and is interested in many varied things. Kristen shares that her favorite passage of scripture is Psalm 23 and Jon chooses Acts 2:17 & 19 as his. Praise the Lord for both Jon and Kristen's contribution to Life at Lakewood in the areas of music and elsewhere as God calls them. May our prayers be with them this week!

How exciting to see everything come together as each one uses the gifts and talents God has blessed them with. It is also great to have eight new Living Stones as part of this year's program. SHARING THE FAITH AT YOUTH

It is an encouragement when someone is brave enough to step forward and share their faith and life experiences. Sunday night at Youth Gabe S. volunteered to relate his story. It was an inspiring time and touched many hearts. Thank you Gabe and to others who are willing to tell others how God has worked in their lives. Great things are taking place every Sunday night...make sure to get involved as our youth grow in their faith.

MOVIE TIME!

The KeenAgers were at it again! Last Tuesday 16 seniors enjoyed lunch at IHOP and then to the movies at Celebration Cinema. It was a great time as they were the only ones in the theater...kind of like a private showing! The movie was "Courageous" and was an excellent story with a strong Christian message. Many left with a few tears in their eyes as it was an emotional and heartfelt movie. Overall, lots of fun and fellowship made the day....even though John got turned around and had to go around the block a couple times.....the KeenAgers always have a great time!
